Wildland Firefighting

Wildland Firefighting

The Okanagan is well known for its hot dry summers and although this is an incredible place to enjoy outdoor and back country activities, it is also a recipe for large forest fires with incredible fuel load.  The residents of Kelowna don’t have to think too far back to remember the firestorm of 2003.  This fire swept through the Okanagan Mountain Park and worked it’s way down into the city while forcing the evacuation of 27,000 residents and taking 239 homes along with it.  This was not the only fire burning in 2003 but one of a large number of fires in British Columbia due to the incredibly dry conditions that summer.  Fires of this magnitude are rare but it seems every year departments around the Okanagan are faced with the difficult task of protecting homes from some type of interface fire.
